Like Priscilla Shirer, IHOP-KC has taught people to imagine themselves as the characters in Bible stories

There is a lot of information about IHOP-KC in this 90 second video.

Some time ago it was noted that in Priscilla Shirer’s book, Discerning the Voice of God: How to Recognize When God Speaks, Shirer writes,

“As I meditate upon a verse, I will often insert my name or a personal pronoun into it to make it more personal. If I’m reading and meditating on a Bible story, I will become the main character so that it’s not merely someone else’s experience with God, but my own. I often ask myself what God would have me do as a result of what I contemplated.” (p. 39) (bold mine) LINK

What you contemplated?

So, it would not be Moses, but Priscilla and the Burning Bush? (Exodus 3:2-4)

Not Elisabeth, but Priscilla, Mother of John the Baptist? (Luke 1:13)

Not Eve, but Priscilla, wife of Adam? (Genesis 2)

Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. (Proverbs 30:5-6)

This unholy practice is an aspect of Ignatian spirituality. It is probable Shirer got this from contemplative teacher Jan Johnson. A practitioner of guided meditations, Johnson has a background in Ignatian spirituality. Link to article–source notes at end of article

Ignatius, a contemplative, was founder of the Jesuits, and a fierce warrior for the counter-Reformation.

It is baffling how anyone could dare to “become” Moses, John the Baptist, Martha, or any other significant Bible figure. Where is the Fear of the Lord?

Yet IHOP-KC has taught the same thing. (31 seconds in video) Given IHOP-KC’s obsession and promotion of numerous Catholic contemplatives, this should not be surprising. Please note also the information about how IHOP-KC people are instructed to seek visions. (45 seconds)  The video also covers IHOP-KC’s errant end-times teaching.

This is produced by When We Understand The Scriptures. There are many of these 90 second videos on this site. Link

  1. I have seen this in Rick Warrens 40 Days in the Word bible study also. It is one of his five (or something similar) tips to studying, memorizing and meditating on Scripture.

  2. that’s great! here in nw Ohio it is perfectly flat with huge skies.

  3. Thank you, but we have the scenery here, even in winter.

  4. Hi! Because of this video I subscribed to their YouTube channel. It’s a challenge to summarize things. I’ve written a novel and it was so difficult to do a synopsis. It took me quite awhile to learn this. It’s a different type of skill.
Oregon? I just returned from our neighbors’ apartment. They’re from Roseburg, Oregon, and miss it so much. This picture used to be availabole here:

Do you want a copy? Isn’t it lovely and sad at the same time? Glad you two live in such a place!

  5. Thank you. WWUTT has a number of these short videos. They did a pretty good job on the IHOP-KC one. Maria, my wife and I went to your site, and your picture of the road and trees looks like a park in Portland Oregon. Where was this picture taken?

  6. excellent poast and video – as you said, a lot shown in a short time. God bless you!

  7. Reblogged this on Truth2Freedom's Blog.
